Are Silk products dairy-free?
All Silk products including Silk Creamer and Silk Live!™ Soy Yogurt are
completely dairy-free and safe for people with dairy allergies. None of our
ingredients are made from animal products, by-products or derivatives. Our
natural flavors do not contain any dairy or other animal products. See our

Are Silk products kosher?
All Silk brand products in all flavors are certified Kosher OU-D. Kosher OU-D
certifies that a dairy-free product was heated on equipment also used for
dairy, and designates that dairy-free products heated on equipment also used
for dairy may not be eaten together with a meat product. It may be eaten
immediately after a meat product, but not together.
Since Silk products are dairy-free, why is the Kosher
certification OU-D?
All Silk products including Silk Creamer and Silk Live!™ Soy Yogurt
are completely dairy-free and safe for people with dairy allergies. While Silk
soy products do not contain dairy ingredients, they may be produced on
equipment that also produces dairy products. Silk follows strict allergen
cleanup procedures to ensure products made on shared equipment are dairy-free.
Silk is certified Kosher OU-D, meaning they are dairy-free products made on
dairy equipment. The D designates that the dairy-free product was heated on
equipment also used for dairy and may not be eaten together with a meat
product. It may be eaten immediately after a meat product, but not together.
In addition to being dairy-free, Silk products are completely vegan. There are
no animal derivatives hidden in any of the ingredients. Our natural flavors do
not contain any dairy or other animal products. The lactic acid and live
cultures used in Silk soy yogurt come from a vegetable source and all vitamins
used to fortify Silk Soymilk are derived from vegetable sources including
calcium carbonate that comes from limestone.

What is a dairy allergy? Can I use Silk products if I am
allergic to dairy?
Many people are allergic to milk (usually cow's milk) or milk products. Dairy
allergies are different from lactose intolerance. A dairy allergy is an extreme
sensitivity to the proteins in dairy products, while lactose intolerance is
caused by a lack of lactase enzyme, which helps the body digest dairy products.
Dairy allergies can range from mild indigestion to anaphylaxis, which is life
threatening.
All Silk products are dairy-free, lactose-free and casein-free. None of our
ingredients come from animal products, by-products or derivatives.

Are Silk products okay for people with wheat and gluten
allergies?
Much like those folks with dairy allergies, there are people who have a
hypersensitivity to wheat or wheat products — like gluten. There is no wheat,
wheat gluten, rye, oats, barley or malt in Silk Soymilk, Silk soy yogurt or
Silk Creamer including the natural flavors.

Freshness
How can I keep Silk Soymilk fresh?
Here are some tips for keeping your Silk Soymilk freshest, longest:
"Don't drink straight out of the carton!" — just like Mom always told you. When
you drink out of the carton, bacteria from your mouth can get into the soy milk
which increases the risk of spoilage.
Write the date you opened your Silk on the screw cap or side of the carton.
Remember, Silk stays fresh for seven to 10 days after you open it, up until the
date printed on the top of the carton.
Keep Silk in the middle of your refrigerator. The top or very back of a
refrigerator tends to be the coldest, which could cause Silk to freeze. Don't
store Silk in the refrigerator door either. Door storage changes temperature
more than any other part of the refrigerator.
Don't leave Silk unrefrigerated. While Silk will not spoil if left out for an
hour or two, those two unrefrigerated hours do shorten the life span of your
soy milk. In fact, every hour on your counter equals one day off its life
expectancy.
For you parents who like to give Silk to your youngsters, be careful with those
bottles and sippy cups. Just like regular dairy milk, soy milk can sour if left
unrefrigerated.
How can I tell if my soy milk is spoiled?
The process of making soy milk is designed to produce a uniform product. If
your soy milk doesn't look, smell or taste the way it usually does, it may be
spoiled. Fresh soy milk does not have a strong odor. Signs of spoilage include:
-
The package looks abnormally bloated
-
When poured, the soy milk appears to have thickened slightly
-
The color of the soy milk has changed (chocolate turns lighter and vanilla may
look beige)
-
It is so thick that it won't pour easily, or it looks like a milk shake and has
curds or lumps
-
Any smell resembling dying flowers, sour milk or chemicals
-
A slightly "off" or beany flavor, or a bitter, metallic, earthy, grassy or
extremely sweet taste
If you are unsure about whether your soy milk has spoiled, do not drink it or
cook with it.
How long will Silk products stay fresh?
Silk Soymilk
will keep fresh in your refrigerator unopened until the date stamped on the top
of the carton. Once opened, Silk will stay fresh for seven to 10 days if kept
refrigerated. It is not unusual for Silk to remain good past the 10-day mark;
however, we only guarantee that it will be good for seven to 10 days.
Silk Shelf Stable
Soymilk does not need to be refrigerated until it has been opened. Silk
Shelf Stable Soymilk will stay fresh unopened until the date stamped on the
carton, usually up to one year from the date of purchase. Once opened, Silk
Shelf Stable Soymilk ages just like regular Silk Soymilk and must be
refrigerated to stay fresh for seven to 10 days.
For tips on cooking with Silk products, visit our
Cooking With Soy section.
Can I freeze Silk Soymilk?
We do not recommend freezing Silk. It can be done; however upon defrosting,
Silk tends to separate irregularly and this greatly reduces the visual quality
and consistency of soy milk.
You may keep Silk in your refrigerator unopened until the date stamped on the
carton. This is not an expiration date, but rather an "open by" date, meaning
we guarantee the quality and freshness of Silk for seven to 10 days when opened
on or before the date stamped on the carton. Freezing does not damage the
nutritional value of the product.

How much soy protein do I need to consume daily for
heart healthy benefits?
The FDA says that diets low in saturated fat and cholesterol that include 25
grams of soy protein per day may reduce the risk of heart disease.
What kind of protein is found in soy milk?
Protein from soy beans is a complete source of protein, meaning it contains all
the essential amino acids.
Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. Twenty amino acids are needed
to build the various proteins used by the human body and all 20 are necessary
for health. The body itself can make 11 of these amino acids, while the other
nine must come from the diet.
What is casein?
Casein is a milk protein. We do not use casein as an ingredient in Silk
products.
What is L. casei? Is it dairy-free?
Lactobacillus is a bacteria found in humans. Lactobacillus is more effective
than many other bacteria in surviving the passage through the gastrointestinal
tract and helps to balance the intestinal microflora. Lactobacillus has been
proven to resist and fight potential pathogens such as E.coli, streptococci,
clostridia and salmonella.
L. casei strains of the Lactobacillus species are found naturally in fermented
vegetables, milk and meat, as well as in the intestine, the human mouth and the
environment.
What are isoflavones? Are they good for me?
Isoflavone is the general term for phytoestrogen, a plant chemical found in
soybeans. Some researchers believe that isoflavones are good for your health.
Currently the federal government has no standard for the recommended daily
allowance of isoflavones.
At Silk, we believe that the isoflavones found in normal servings of soy foods,
consumed throughout the day, can be part of a healthy diet. We do not believe
in supplementing the diet with isolated isoflavone supplements.
Each 8 oz. serving of Silk Soymilk contains approximately 20 to 35 milligrams
of isoflavones. Silk Live!™ Soy Yogurt contains approximately 20-30 mg
of isoflavones per serving. The amount of isoflavones in soy beans varies from
year to year depending on seed and soil quality, weather and other variables
that affect each harvest.
Why do you put calcium carbonate in Silk Soymilk?
Calcium carbonate is a type of calcium that is a naturally occurring mineral
found in limestone. We use calcium carbonate in our products because it does
not react with other Silk ingredients and can be easily absorbed by the human
body. We include 300 mg per 8 oz. serving of Silk Soymilk, which is 30 percent
of the recommended daily allowance for calcium. Please read our information on
building strong bones to learn more about how calcium works in the
body.
How do you process the cocoa in Silk products?
The cocoa beans used in Silk Chocolate Soymilk are Dutch processed. This means
that the cocoa beans are cleaned, cracked and roasted. At the time of roasting,
the beans are treated with alkali for color and flavor. This process yields a
dark, flavorful cocoa "liquor," which is made into a cocoa cake that is then
milled into cocoa powder. There is no dairy involved in this process.
Can you make a sugar-free soy milk or soy yogurt?
We offer
Silk Unsweetened Soymilk for people who enjoy soy milk but don't care
for the added sugar. In the case of our Silk Live!™ Soy Yogurt, sugar is
required to help feed the live cultures.
For diabetic or health conscious consumers, remember that our soy milk contains
less sugar per serving than a glass of milk. Fat-free dairy milk has 11 grams
of sugar per serving, compared to 4 grams of sugar per 8 oz. serving of Silk
Organic Plain Soymilk. One 8 oz. serving of Silk Unsweetened Soymilk has 1 gram
of sugar. Look for Silk Unsweetened at your local heath foods stores or ask for
it at your local grocery.
Do you offer fat-free soy milk?
While we don't have a fat-free soy milk at this time, we do offer
Silk Light Soymilk in Plain, Vanilla and Chocolate flavors for those of
you who prefer a lower fat product. These flavors of Silk Light all contain 2
grams or less of fat per 8 oz. serving. To make it low in fat, we use a
mechanical process to squeeze the oil out of the soybeans.
Does Silk Soymilk contain caffeine?
There are 55 mg of caffeine in one 8 oz. serving of Silk Coffee, 75 mg of
caffeine in one 11 oz. serving of Silk Coffee, 3.6 mg of caffeine in one 8 oz.
serving of Silk Chocolate Soymilk, 45 mg of caffeine in one 8 oz. serving of
Silk Mocha and 0.3 mg in Silk Chai Soymilk.
As a comparison, 1 cup of regular coffee contains 115 to 175 mg of caffeine and
1 cup of decaf coffee contains 3 to 4 mg.
What natural flavors and flavorings do you use in Silk
products?
The natural flavors listed in our ingredient panels are derived from natural
sources – nothing artificial is used. The natural flavors do not contain any
animal ingredients. They are free of dairy, eggs, MSG, rye, oats, barley, malt
and wheat. Our natural flavors are carried in a gluten-free, corn-based
alcohol.
What types of sweeteners do you use?
At Silk, we use organic evaporated cane juice, also called unrefined sugar, as
the sweetener in many of our products. We use evaporated cane juice because we
can purchase it from a source that produces it organically.
It is made from sugar cane juice that is released by pressing the juice out of
sugar cane stalks. The juice is evaporated and sugar crystals form. The
crystals are milled once to give them a more even texture.
Evaporated cane juice is different from refined sugar because it takes 50% less
production than refined sugar. Because evaporated cane juice does not require
as much processing, it retains more essential vitamins and minerals. Plus,
evaporated cane juice has an intense sweetness that allows us to use less of it
when sweetening our products.

What are live or active cultures?
The bacteria used to ferment Silk Cultured Soy are: L. bulgaricus, S.
thermophilus, L. acidophilus, B. bifidum, L. casei
and L. rhamnosus. These bacteria are also found naturally inside the
body's digestive tract and are believed to boost immunity and prevent digestive
ailments. Silk Cultured Soy is dairy-free. The bacteria used are from non-dairy
sources.
Are Silk products pasteurized?
Yes. We use UHT (Ultra High Temperature) pasteurization to make sure that our
products are free of harmful microorganisms.
Is Silk Plus vegetarian?
Absolutely! Like all of our Silk soy products, our Silk Plus DHA Omega-3 and
Silk Plus Fiber are vegetarian. In fact, Silk soy products are not made with
any animal products; they are purely vegan! And like all of our Silk products,
they are made with soybeans that have not been genetically modified.
Do Silk products have omega-3 fatty acids?
Whole soy foods provide naturally-occurring omega-3 essential fatty acids.
Since Silk is made from high-quality, non-GMO whole soy beans, Silk products
contain these omega-3s. Given the supportive research on the benefits of
omega-3 DHA in particular, 100% vegetarian omega-3 DHA has been added to
Silk Plus Omega-3 DHA.
What is an omega-3?
Omega-3’s are fatty acids which have been studied for their role in health and
well-being. ALA is an essential omega-3 fatty acid; meaning that
it must be included in the diet for optimal health. Common sources of ALA
include soybeans, flaxseed, and walnuts. DHA is another type of omega-3
nutrient and has been studied for its role in heart, brain and eye health. Silk
Plus Omega-3 DHA contains both naturally-occurring ALA, and added DHA from a
natural vegetarian source.
What is DHA?
Docosahexanoic Acid (DHA) is an omega-3 fatty acid. Although it is found in
most tissues of the body, the highest concentrations of DHA are prevalent in
the brain, nervous system and the retina of the eye. The more DHA is consumed
in the diet, the more DHA is available for these tissues.
Why is DHA important?
Although DHA is present in most tissues within the body, DHA accumulates at
greatest concentrations within the brain, nervous system and retinal tissue of
the eye. Therefore, it is recognized to play a role in supporting normal
development in these areas. DHA has also been shown to help promote heart
health.
What is the recommended dietary amount for DHA?
A recent report from the Institute of Medicine (National Institutes of Health,
2005) has suggested that a healthy diet include 1600 mg of ALA omega-3. Of that
amount, they suggest that Americans consume 10% of their omega-3’s in the form
of DHA and EPA (a similar fatty acid). Silk Plus Omega-3 DHA contains 370 mg of
ALA and 32 mg of DHA per serving.
What are other sources of DHA?
DHA naturally occurs in fish, particular fatty fish. Salmon, herring, albacore
and bluefin tuna and whitefish are all good sources of DHA. The DHA used in our
Silk Plus Omega-3 DHA is a vegetarian source derived from algae.
Do Silk products contain fiber?
Whole soy foods provide fiber and Silk is made from high-quality, non-GMO whole
soy beans. Silk Plus
Fiber has fiber added to provide a total of five grams of dietary fiber
per 8-ounce serving.
What is the importance of dietary fiber?
Fiber has also been shown to help promote healthy digestive function. Also,
meals that include soluble fiber tend to slow down digestion, thereby delaying
the absorption of glucose, a blood sugar. This can be helpful in normalizing
blood sugar levels. Soluble fibers can also help to promote a feeling of
“fullness”, resulting in reduced calorie intake — a big plus if you’re trying
to lose weight. In addition, the presence of fiber in the diet may help promote
healthy cholesterol levels.
What is the daily recommended intake for fiber?
The recommended amount of dietary fiber for a 2000-calorie diet is 25 grams per
day. Unfortunately, most Americans only consume about half of that amount. Silk
Plus Fiber contains 5 g fiber per serving.
What are other sources of dietary fiber?
Other sources of dietary fiber include fruits and vegetables, whole grains,
dried fruits, oats, beans, peas and legumes, including soy. When beginning to
add more fiber to your diet, it is wise to do so gradually and to drink plenty
of fluids, allowing your body to ease into this new habit without digestive
discomfort.

What is NutraFlora®?
In scientific terms, NutraFlora® is a "short chain fructooligosaccharide" – a
dietary fiber found naturally in a variety of foods, including bananas, barley,
garlic, honey, onion and rye. NutraFlora® is a prebiotic, meaning it acts as a
food source for the flora (or probiotics) within the digestive tract. This
interaction between pre— and probiotics encourages a natural, healthy balance
within the digestive system, which in turn helps to enhance calcium absorption1.
Why is calcium important?
Calcium is an important nutrient involved in bone health, bone density and the
prevention of osteoporosis. Because calcium is a fundamental element in our
skeletal system, getting enough of it is necessary to maintain healthy bones.

Is Silk product packaging recyclable?
Every area has different recycling rules so please check with your local
recycling center for details. Here is some general information:
-
Silk Live!™ Soy Yogurt cups and caps are made from Polypropylene
(PP), which is classified as a #5 plastic.
-
Silk Soymilk cartons can be recycled after removing the plastic screw cap.
-
Silk Shelf Stable quart cartons and 8.25 oz. prisma packs can be recycled in
certain areas of the U.S.
-
Silk Single Serves (11 oz. bottles) are in #1 containers and are recyclable
after removing the plastic label.
-
Silk Live!™ Soy Yogurt containers are #5 and can be recycled in certain
areas of the U.S. The lids can also be recycled.
At this point we feel that we are using the most environmentally friendly and
cost-effective packaging available for our products, but we’re always looking
to decrease the overall waste factor of our containers.
What does shelf stable mean and how is it different from
regular Silk Soymilk?
Shelf stable containers are box-like and are often used for products like
juice, soup, soy or rice milk. The containers are sterile and hermetically
sealed much like canned foods, which allows them to be kept in storage without
refrigeration.
They are great for stocking your pantry or taking on a trip. Once opened, shelf
stable products need to be refrigerated. Look for Silk Shelf Stable Soymilk in
the health food section of grocery stores as well as any natural or health food
specialty store.
What does organic mean?
Regulations state that foods labeled "organic" cannot be grown with the use of
synthetic pesticides, herbicides, fungicides or chemical fertilizers. Organic
food products must not be produced with the use of biotechnology.
Plus, all certified organic products must maintain a strict audit trail that
allows a product to be traced all the way back to the field in which it was
grown. Most Silk products are made with certified organic soybeans. Read more
about other ways that
Silk Soymilk is helping our environment.
Do Silk products contain genetically engineered (GMO)
soybeans?
No. At Silk, we use soy beans that were produced without the use of
genetic engineering or gene manipulation. We aggressively monitor our growers
to ensure that our soy beans are of the very best quality.
We test our soy beans using today's best science and most accurate methodology.
Highly reputable independent laboratories specializing in genetic
identification regularly test multiple product samples. We will continue to
test our products based on the best scientific methods available to maintain
our high quality standards and our product integrity.
Silk complies with all U.S. regulatory standards and requirements related to
soy product processing, manufacturing and labeling. Read more about how
Silk Soymilk is helping our environment.
Why doesn't your packaging say GMO-Free or Non-GMO?
Until recently the terms Genetically Modified Organism (GMO), GMO-Free and
Non-GMO were used to help identify foods that contained genetically altered
ingredients. These terms are no longer recognized by the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) and therefore cannot be used on food packaging.
According to the National Organic Standards, products that are certified
organic by definition cannot contain genetically modified ingredients. At Silk,
we use only Non-GMO soybeans. Look for the biotechnology statement on our
packaging, under the list of ingredients: "This soy milk is made from soybeans
that were not genetically engineered."

Silk Soymilk is helping our environment.

What are soy beans?
The soy bean comes from a leguminous plant (Glycine max) that grows
pods with clusters of two to three beans. The color of the bean varies from
shades of brown to green and the shape can be oval or round. People began
cultivating soy beans in Northern China three centuries ago. Today soy beans
are used in many food products, including soy milk, soy cheese, soy yogurt and
tofu.
Where does Silk get its soy beans from?
Silk is the largest user of U.S. certified organic, food grade soybeans. In the
past five years alone, we have purchased more than $60 million worth of
domestic organic soybeans, farmed on nearly 19,000 organic acres.
Because the U.S. produces limited quantities of organic food grade soybeans,
occasionally supply conditions beyond our control – such as drought or quality
issues – affect our ability to fulfill all of our soybean needs domestically.
For example, a severe U.S. drought in 2003 resulted in a significant shortage
of domestic organic food grade soybeans. At that time, Silk entered into
contracts with international suppliers.
Regardless of their origin – domestic or international – the soybeans purchased
by Silk are certified organic by independent certifiers accredited by the U.S.
Department of Agriculture (USDA), in compliance with the organic standards set
by the National Organic Program (NOP).
What is Silk's response to the recent FDA news?
In light of the recent pet food recall due to melamine contamination, the FDA
is now testing some of the powdered proteins imported from China and used in
human foods to determine if melamine can be found. Processed soy protein powder
and soy protein gluten are two of the ingredients under investigation. Silk
products do not contain either of these ingredients.
Because nearly all Silk products are made from whole organic, food grade
soybeans, – not from soy protein or soy gluten powders – it is virtually
impossible for our products to be contaminated with melamine at any stage of
the manufacturing process. Silk Light products are made from
domestically-sourced natural soy flour, sourced and produced domestically in
strictly regulated production facilities.
As well, the vast majority of the whole, organic soybeans used in Silk products
come from U.S. farmers. To maintain a consistent supply, we source a small
percentage of our whole beans internationally, where we maintain relationships
with carefully selected, safe and reliable partners.
Silk ensures the quality, purity and integrity of every ingredient in our
products through rigorous monitoring and testing protocols. Based on our
internal and external audits, we are confident in the safety and quality of our
products.
